Le précédent album des Cribs fait clairement partie de mes préférés de 2007. J'avais pas trop suivi leur actu mais en Septembre ça se bouscule : nouvel album avec Johnny Marr dans le line up et concert au Nouveau Casino.

Les nouvelles compos sont pas mal on retrouve ce qui a fait le charme de "Men's needs ..." : de belles mélodie saturées, un discours direct avé l'accent et des chorus qui font mouche a chaque fois.

Ce qu'on peut pas leur enlever à ces ptits gars c'est qu'ils y vont avec les tripes a fond du début à la fin, un peu kamikaze quand même et du coup des fois la sortie de route a du mal à être évitée. On a eu la chance d'entendre des titres de "Men's Needs ..." et la ça frappe comme une évidence, ces titres la sont quand même d'un autre niveau !

Anyway on passe un bon moment sans se prendre la tête, l'apport de Marr est pas forcement évident mais c'est cool de voir jouer une "légende" à ce que tout le monde dit (honnêtement je me suis mis aux Smiths il y a 15 jours donc je suis pas en mesure de vraiment juger). Une heure de set, court mais quand même intense pour les organismes, je comprend les mecs ...

Je n'ai de cesse de le dire, juger le passé demande un certain recul, que ce soit pour les conflits armés, les déception sentimentales ou pour le sujet du jour : les meilleurs sons de 2007. Oui bon je sais on en est plutôt à faire le bilan de 2008 mais j'avais ce post en stock et surtout ça marque mal de laisser un trou beant dans mes bilans annuels surtout vu la qualité de cette année là !

Sorti un peu tôt dans l'année (voire bien leaké l'année d'avant), ce disque marque encore la progression du groupe peut être un peu trop produit mais d'une efficacité redoutable. Je reste un inconditionnel de ces ptits gars là et de leur sautillante melancolie. Un album qui m'a accompagné tout le début d'année, dans le froid.

La famille Tweedy accueille le talentueux Nels Cline à la guitare pour des compos lechées. Cline nous en met plein les oreilles avec ses solos desarticulés et touchants, les compos bien que clairement plus classiques que sur les precedents album m'ont vraiment regalé. On sent une chaleur et une unité vraiment enveloppante.

A noter que ces gars savent s'entourer de beau monde : une prod signée Alex Kopranos, un titre "chanté par Lee Renaldo et plus récemment l'arrivée dans le line up de Johnny Marr.

Just for the records ...

Auteurs d'un de mes albums préférés en 2004, le bien nommé "Album of the Year" (la dernière edition de l'album comprend en fait deux disques la version originale et une full version acoustique), les ptits gars d'Omaha revenaient l'année derniere avec un nouveau concept album : "Help Wanted Nights".

C'était il y a presque un an déjà, j'allais enfin voir The Good Life sur scène. Mais bon malheureusment pas en tete d'affiche, en premiere partie d'un groupe que je ne connaissais pas.

Un set (trop) court mais sympathique dans une audience un peu à contre courant mais neanmoins respectueuse.

Décidément ce début d'année est plutôt collaboratif...
Aujourd'hui, mon ami Tom a l'extrême gentillesse de partager sa liste 2007. Qu'écoutait on donc à quelques encablures d'un des hauts lieux de la finance mondiale, presque sur le méridien de Greenwich, face au "Millenium Dome" ?

Une sélection éclectique avec vue sur la Tamise ... by Tom :

1. Patrick Watson – Close to Paradise

Officiellement une release de fin 2006 (au Canada), mais sorti chez nous seulement l’année suivante…alors il a sa place dans ce meilleur de l’année 2007, non ? Sorte de Satie des temps modernes, Patrick Watson maîtrise superbement l’orchestration et les arrangements, mis en valeurs par la subtilité de son guitariste Simon Angell. Cet album est planant, transcendant, inclassable… Patrick Watson est aussi un génial showman, par exemple quand il descend de la scène de la salle de l’ICA London pour entonner a capela, debout sur un tabouret au milieu de la foule, le très beau Man Under the Sea… Difficile pour moi de sélectionner de manière arbitraire un titre sur cet album, il est bien plus enrichissant de l’écouter d’une seule traite…Neanmoins, The Great Escape est un morceau sublime dont le titre résume parfaitement la teneur de cet album, une grande évasion vers un doux rêve musical.

2. Peter Von Poehl – Going Where The Tea Trees Are

Mon attirance toute particulière pour ce qui nous vient de Scandinavie – ses architectes/designers épurés, ses vodkas et autres tord-boyaux réconfortants, ses femmes délicieuses – m’a incité à inclure le très bel album du Suédois Peter Von Poehl sur la deuxième place du podium 2007. Signé sur l’excellent label français Tôt ou Tard, Peter Von Poehl par sa simplicité et sa pureté dans une des plus belles ballades poétiques de l’année.

Mal de vivre, solitude, dépression, cet album traduit l’univers sombre et cendré de Elvis Perkins, marqué par des évènements familiaux tragiques. Ce premier album est touchant par son authenticité et il a une place très spéciale dans ma discothèque 2007.

4. Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Les Texans de Spoon réussissent là un album créatif et très soigné. On se laisse facilement entraîner par ces rythmes et refrains énergétiques et par la voix légèrement rocailleuse de Britt Daniel. Cet album me semble encore plus intéressant que l’excellent Girls Can Tell par la richesse des influences musicales qui transparaissent sur certains morceaux.

5. Benny Sings – …At Home

Ce multi-instrumentiste néerlandais m’a totalement charmé avec cet album. Ambiance très particulière, ‘à la maison’ comme le dit le titre de l’album, très chaleureux et apaisant… Grande sensibilité musicale, très beaux arrangements un brin jazzy.

6. Feist – The Reminder

Comment ne pas être charmé(e) par la voix mélancolique de Leslie Feist ? Cet album, s’il peut paraître moins abouti que Let It Die, réchauffe le cœur et apaise l’âme.

7. Jack Penate – Matinée

Un jeune songwriter prometteur dont le premier album aux sonorités et rythmes euphoriques le place un peu en marge de la scène anglaise. C’est un grand bol d’air frais (on en a bien besoin, non ?)

8. Shantel – Disko Partizani

Je m’autorise dans ce classement 2007 à faire figurer un artiste pop/electro, dont la grande admiration pour la musique Arabe et d’Europe de l’Est, est intéressante. Cet album respire les Balkans, l’Afrique du Nord, la Jamaïque. Sonorités pop-club-yiddish-rai-ska- reggae, un melting pot surprenant.

9. Bright Eyes – Cassadaga

Cet album très attendu de Saddle Creek Records est vraiment abouti et traduit peut-être la maturité naissante de Conor Oberst ? Ni particulièrement triste ou joyeux, cet album a la fraicheur folk m’a ravi. Il semble que la profonde dépression en chanson dont Bright Eyes avait fait sa spécialité (notamment sur le précédent album I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning) a disparu...pour notre plus grand plaisir peut-être.

10. The Cribs – Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever

Clin d’oeil et remerciement tout particulier à mon pote Distance qui m’a offert cet album dont l’écoute d’un morceau remplit largement les QEQR (quantités d’énergie quotidienne recommandées). Je crois que Distance avait d’ailleurs fait un bon post sur cet album, je vous y renvoie donc.

Quand j'ai conseillé à mon ami Elgann de jeter un œil à Californication, j'étais sur qu'il aimerait. Dans la série, le personnage principal est un écrivain en panne d'inspiration et se voit proposer de tenir un blog pour un magazine en ligne.

J'ai donc pensé pour cette chronique à une mise en abîme en "commandant" à Elgann article sur la série. Parole à Elgann donc. Thanks dude !

"«And what about a blowjob ?» me tira définitivement de cette torpeur qu'on connait tous un vendredi après midi, entre la digestion et les promesses illusoires du week end.

«And what about Love ?» pourrait répondre Hank Moody, talentueux écrivain (é)perdu de son ex femme et de sa petite fille.
Hank, c'est le genre de gars que nous autres les mecs du XXI siècle ont un jour ou l'autre voulu ressembler : la cool attitude, la badine distante, le sourire narquois – la cigarette au bec et surtout cette indifférence désarmante qui plait tant aux femmes.
Je ne sais plus qui disait qu'on vivait tous d'expédients, si Hank ne déroge pas à cette règle – dans la drogue, l'alcool, le sexe – c'est pouvoir mieux s'abandonner, se perdre dans cette existence vide de sens, de ses manques d'inspirations qui lui permettraient de choisir de nouveau la vie à ces émotions fortes.

Ne nous y trompons pas, Californication ne tourne pas qu'autour des - à - corps à corps, revisité joyeusement par des yuppies impertinents.
Porté par des morceaux pop rock, aux intonations douces amères, il parle de ce désir de retrouver ce bonheur que nous aurions délaissé, et nous laissant complètement démuni (« Cause it's too important – To stay the way it's been – There's no blame for how love did slowly fade » - Death Cab for Cutie - "Title And Registration" (link removed) ).
C'est aussi un regard tendre et plein de complicité entre un père paumé et sa fille protectrice, parce que les femmes sont définitivement les muses de ces hommes tiraillés entre les facéties de l'adolescence et les responsabilités, parfois encombrantes, et les renoncements de l'âge adulte.

Il y a certainement d'autres choses à dire sur cette série, mais les acteurs tous formidables le feront certainement mieux que moi."

Pour finir je me permet de vous faire partager quelques répliques déjà mythiques :

The Weakerthans

Le nombre et la qualité des groupes Canadiens apparus ces dernières années est phénoménal, The Weakerthans n'est sans doute pas le plus avant-gardiste. Difficile en fait de les associer à la vague Arcade Fire et la tribu Arts&Crafts (même si certains des membres ont apparement fricoté avec Broken Social Scene) tant leur style est différent.

Non. Leur créneau c'est plutôt la simplicité et l'efficacité que ce soit sur les "ballades pop" ou sur les "hymnes rock". Leurs précédents efforts comportait déjà quelques perles notables (cf "Aside" sur Left And Leaving) le Reunion Tour qu'ils nous ont soumis cette année est à mon sens le plus abouti. Un talent et une sincérité qui ne peut que me faire enrager vu le manque de reconnaissance à leur égard.

Cette efficacité, cette capacité a faire monter des morceaux avec 3 riffs fulgurants d'où vient elle vraiment ? Alors la je dis merci à Wikipedia qui m'a permis de reconstituer le puzzle. Ce qui m'a mis la puce à l'oreille c'est la filiation avec Anti-Epitaph Records. Il se trouve que le chanteur John Samson faisait partie du groupe de punk Propagandhi rendus sympathiques non seulement par leur nom rigolo mais aussi par leurs positions courageuses, en chansons, contre le racisme et l'homophobie notamment. C'était vers 1995... alors que The Offspring et autre Green Day cartonnaient. J'avais acheté une compil de Fat Wreck Chords Records : "Survival Of The Fattest" avec NOFX, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, No Use for a Name et ... Propagandhi. Super compil :)

Comme on se retrouve ! En tout cas belle reconversion.

Comme l'a très bien documenté Toto dans son dernier post ciné/TV, les nerds sont à la mode dans les séries récemment.

The IT Crowd est une série british qui nous conte les aventures de l'équipe du support technique de Reynholm Industries. Enterrés dans leur sous sol, Roy le technicien cool et flemmard ; Moss le nerd de base qui vit encore chez Maman et Jen la "relationship manager" larguée en IT et passablement menteuse ...

C'est vraiment du bon, deux saisons de 6 épisodes sont disponibles ce qui fait tout juste deux bonnes soirées télé !

Les gros nerds disent que le thème du générique est inspiré de Gary Numan ... pfff ...

Je ne suis habituellement pas très sensible au groupes anglais mais ça fait quelques semaines que j'ai du mal a décoller du dernier album des Cribs ("Men's Needs, Women Need's, Whatever").

D'entrée avec Our Bovine Public le groupe dévoile une énergie intéressante, on retrouve des sonorités tres Strokes. Une rythmique impeccable et des riffs survitaminés qui n'hésitent pas à porter la plupart des chansons ("Girls Like Mystery", "Men's Needs"), les textes ironiques d'un des trois frères qui compose ce trio se retrouvent idéalement mis en valeur.

Quelques références ont également certainement participé à cette belle réussite, le disque est produit par Alex Kapranos tandis que le vénérable Lee Ranaldo pousse la chansonnette sur "Be Safe" ...

Indie Hall Of Fame Inductee n°2 - The Wrens

Deuxieme entrant dans mon Hall of Fame : The Wrens pour l'ensemble de leur oeuvre.

En 2003, sortait The Meadowlands album excellent recompensant le travail d'un groupe qui en presque une vingtaine d'années d'existence n'a réalisé 'que' 3 albums, des albums dont la qualité et la sincerité auraient merité de connaitre plus de succes.

Le mérite c'est une valeur (à la mode de chez nous oui grace au petit nicolas... beurk) que représentent bien ces gars la, enfin vu de l'exterieur ... parcequ'en fait c'est juste une belle histoire. The Wrens c'est un peu d'espoir pour toutes les personnes passionnées qui perseverent et n'hesitent pas à faire des concessions sans perdre de vue le but, c'est la tortue du lievre et la tortue.

3 albums pas degeu,
4 membres sympatiques qui ont gardé leur boulot de tous les jours tout en essayant de faire de la musique,
6 labels differents epuisés,
9.5 chez Pitchfork chacun pense ce qu'il veut mais objectivement c'est rare ...
18 ans d'existance

Chers amis,

mon post précédent sans aucun commentaire aura, à ma grande surprise, suscité des commentaires presque autant qu'un post chiadé avec des citations de la bible et des métaphores empreintes de substances illicites ... Je me suis demandé quoi faire ... continuer comme ça dans le dénuement le plus total et continuer ce blog sur le mode forum ou bien remercier les quelques lecteurs amis qui passent par la et prennent la peine de me demander si j'ai pas perdu la tête ...

Reprendre mes esprits donc c'est la bonne décision ...

Deuxième concert de Midlake pour moi cette année après une super expérience dans le froid de Washington, ambiance très différente en ce mois d'Avril au trabendo que je découvrais pour l'occasion (boulet ...) ...

Beaucoup de monde, c'est compact, impossible d'accéder au devant de la scène surtout après s'être très largement attardé au bar ... tu m'étonnes, c'est un peu leur seul concert dans notre beau pays :)

Pratiquement la même setlist que la dernière fois avec l'inédit "Children of the ground" et les anciens "Balloon Maker" et "Some of Them were Superstitious" ... je savais quoi regarder et je me suis régalé à observer le jeu du bassiste et du batteur vraiment très impressionnants.

Ca fait bien un an maintenant que j'ai découvert cet album et ça m'a fait me pencher sur Fleetwood Mac, je vous conseille "Rhiannon" (ci joint) ... difficile de vouloir nier le lien de parenté, la ressemblance est troublante. Néanmoins, je ne crie pas au plagiat bien au contraire, leur digestion a été tranquille et le rendu est impeccable.

C'est bon j'ai ma fausse excuse pour pouvoir parler du concert d'Arcade Fire d'il y a 3 mois. Il fallait absolument que je poste ça de Montréal et de ma chambre avec vue sur le Saint Laurent je me permet une carte postale périmée.

C'est fou comme cette ville est devenue en quelques années un des hauts lieux de la création musicale ... Arcade Fire est pas le premier groupe à en sortir mais c'est sans doute l'un des meilleurs. Je discutais la semaine dernière au boulot de la musique d'aujourd'hui avec quelqu'un qui a perdu pied depuis la fin des années 70 et je lui disais que notre époque verrait aussi sortir des groupes mythiques : je pense vraiment qu'Arcade Fire en fait partie.

Pour preuve si nécessaire après écoute des deux premiers albums, ce concert à l'Olympia, la première des deux dates parisiennes. Grosse ambiance, un véritable trip de masse, quel plaisir de voir cette dizaine de musiciens échanger leurs instruments et maitriser leur sujet au point de nous coller une bonne grosse claque ...

Pour le coup c'est la première fois que je comprends cette parole du Christ ... et je comprend pourquoi Neon Bible :)

Voila un groupe que ne renierait sans doute pas AbsolutNoise. Je sais plus bien comment je suis tombé sur ce groupe sans doute chez l'un d'entre vous ... Au debut je me suis dit : "putain ca y est enfin un groupe qui reprend le flambeau de The Postal Service" ...

Ces suédois confirment avec leur dernier album "vs the snow" tout le bien que leur maxi avait pu faire penser d'eux ... en esperant que vous accrochiez à cette electro pop de qualité !

Raté les Cold War Kids, certain disent qu'ils étaient meilleurs que Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah ce soir.

Beaucoup de monde à La Cigale, il fait chaud et un con de poteau me gâche un peu la vie et la vue.

Un bon concert mais loin d'atteindre les sommets ...

Au début de la semaine mon Ipod s'est fait marcher dessus, résultat un écran éclaté et une façade arrière complètement voilé... par chance il marche encore, mais impossible de visualiser quoique ce soit à l'écran, de plus il reste figé sur le dernier album écouté. Dans mon malheur, j'ai la chance qu'il s'agisse du dernier Wilco, que je ne peux m'empêcher d'écouter en boucle ...

Il arrivera un moment ou je remplacerait mon Ipod. Alors, je le placerai dans un beau tupperware en kevlar et je l'enterrerai sous un arbre. En espérant que les generations futures tombent dessus ... belle fin pour un Ipod ...

Avant d'entamer Walken, Jeff Tweedy touche la main d'un(e) fan au premier rang et lance une deuxième partie de concert phénoménale ...

Jusque la Wilco nous avait gratifié d'un set impeccable et beau en concluant par les émouvants (mais expérimentaux) Via Chicago et Jesus, Etc.

Dans un bataclan parsemé, Walken, I'm The Man Who Loves You et Hummingbird devoilent toute la maitrise d'un groupe qui non content de connaitre ses classiques sur le bout des doigts, sait maitriser ses influences pour les dépasser et recréer dans une euphorie communicative.

C'est un groupe de scène, un grand groupe de scène. Alors que le dernier album semble tout indiqué pour une écoute dans un bon gros fauteuil club coincé entre les sixties et les seventies, Wilco réussit à lui donner une autre dimension. La faute est partagée mais on saluera le guitariste Nels Cline pour son interprétation et ses solos diablement efficaces.

Lorsque On and On and On débute on surprend le batteur Glenn Kotche pensif à l'écoute de l'intro, accoudé sur sa grosse caisse semblant s'empreigner de l'atmosphère de la chanson.

Moment extrêmement touchant, c'est définitivement une très belle déclaration d'amour ... a qui ? on peut divaguer et penser que c'est aussi un moyen de s'adresser au public.

Deux rappels pour finir, un minimum pour Wilco, et encore l'occasion d'entendre le magnifique Impossible Germany et le grand classique jubilatoire I'm Always In Love.

Une grande soirée, clairement ...

Seule déception avoir loupé le passage de Band of Horses au même moment je crois ... ceux qui y étaient raconteront sans doute.

Concert méchamment terne par rapport à leur dernier passage à la boule noire ... ils sont bons sans aucun doute mais je les ai senti usés et sans peps ni ce grain de folie si caractéristique à leurs meilleurs shows ...

Maya Barsony - La Boule Noire - 30 Janvier 2007

Fidèle a ma grande tradition de revue de concerts périmés je voulais parler du concert de Maya Barsony d'il y a 4 mois (vous avez bien lu ...).

La Boule Noire était bien pleine pour cette chanteuse dont je n'avais jamais entendu parler, et pourtant : demi-soeur d'Arthur H, collaboratrice de Bumcello (musiciens de M), a participé au film La Mome sur Edith Piaf et accompagnée sur scène de musiciens vraiment tres bons - Pat West à la guitare, Maxime Garoute à la batterie (M, Zazie, Saez), Johan Dalgaard aux claviers (Jean-Louis Aubert, Saez), avec en guest star Boris Jardel (Indochine, Axel Bauer, No One Is Innocent, Vanessa Paradis) ... enfin pour les references on a le droit d'hesiter mais l'ensemble impressionne pas mal par le groove, la puissance et la cohérence d'ensemble.

Maya entre en scène en tenue de kickboxing avant de la retirer pour se retrouver en boxer du meilleur effet ... le ton est donné, pechu et décomplexé. Les textes sont sensuels et travaillés (peut etre un peu trop même) avec des thèmes récurrents : le kickboxing, les cowboys et le sexe ...

Au final un bon concert avec des chansons efficaces (et en bonus une reprise de Christophe - Avec les filles j'ai un succès fou) qui peuvent faire de Maya et son groupe une des sensations des prochains mois - l'ensemble devrait se retrouver bientôt chez Sony sur un album "Femme d'Exterieur" avec parait il la participation de Brigitte Fontaine.

Je suis pas sur d'être un fan absolu mais j'aime bien l'esprit.

Fellow friends,

ce début d'année a été riche en bonne musique mais jusque la je me suis plutôt laissé charmer par les blockbuster indie ... sacrés morceaux : The Shins, Arcade Fire, CYHSY, Bright Eyes ...
Alors que je m'impatiente devant de prochaines sorties qui sentent tres bon la corde de guitare neuve (Voxtrot, The Clientele, Wilco) je me suis laissé tenté et envouté par Windmill à la faveur d'un buzz certain.
Vous trouverez ici une critiques dithyrambique, ce que je dirais moi c'est que la voix du sieur Matt Dillon ne laisse pas indifférent (voir Alec Ounsworth) et que les afficionados de melodies entrainantes et de chorus puissants devraient apprécier.

It has been 10 days since this deranged student hit Virginia Polytechnic and State University, what a shock, an horrifying story.

I have spent one year and a half there, living off campus between Ascot Lane and Prices Fork. I remember when I first receive the University brochures, I couldn't quite figure out what it would be like, all these pictures were so static, such a different cultural background than the one I was used to. I couldnt' be more excited of getting there.

There I found a huge university, and an ancient one, everything was so perfect : state of the art facilities, professional teachers, from all over the world classmates ... and a small town which you could not say if it was there before the university or if it just grew on it's back.
I made new friends, lived with roommates and a couple of cats. My room didn't have windows.
I discovered football, the Hokies and their 65 000 seats Lane stadium (even sneaked bourbon and coke in).
